If you're after a tailgate assist that does more than just slow the drop, our Cobra 4x4 kits at OzBestDealz come in both strut and electric versions. The electric tailgate lift assist is the one most people don't know exists until they see it. Open and close your tailgate at the push of your factory remote, the same fob you already use to lock the ute. No extra switches, no aftermarket clutter on the dash. Check the video on this page to see it in action.

The tailgate of your ute faces constant wear and tear. Instead of risking damage by carelessly dropping it or leaving it unsecured, there is a simple solution available. Cobra 4x4 offers tailgate lock kits and assist lift struts designed specifically for Australian utes, with options that are compatible with the most commonly used models on the road. The cost of these kits ranges from $59 to $159, with discounted prices at 34% to 47% off the recommended retail price.
The standard tailgate assist struts are the simple option. They control the speed the tailgate drops so it lowers smoothly instead of slamming down on its own weight. Good for tradies in and out of the tub all day, and it takes the load off hinges and cables over time, especially if you're already running a roller shutter and adding extra trips to the tray.
Step up to the electric kit and you get full tailgate lift and close function tied into your remote. Handy when you've got your hands full of gear, or you just can't be bothered reaching round the back every time. It's quickly becoming the ute tailgate assist setup most blokes ask for once they've seen it work.
The Cobra 4x4 electric tailgate lock kits are the headline product in this range, and for good reason. The whole system integrates with your existing factory key remote, so you're not adding a separate fob to your keyring. Lock and unlock the tailgate the same way you lock your doors.
Each kit ships as a complete installation package. You get the electric gas struts, a wiring harness, the control module, interior cab buttons, and full instructions. The security stop function is worth noting specifically: if the tailgate hits an obstacle while closing, it stops rather than forcing through. That matters when kids, dogs, or gear are near the tub.
The interior buttons give you a second control point from inside the cab. No going around the back just to pop the tailgate when you're loading up at the servo or a campsite. A press from the driver's or passenger's cab button does the job.
Fitment is exact, not universal. There's a specific kit matched to each body and wiring configuration. Check your build year carefully before ordering:
If your ute isn't in the list above, browse the full 4x4 product group or search by your vehicle to check what's available.
Every tailgate assist kit we stock is engineered for specific ute models, so it bolts into the factory tailgate assembly without drilling, cutting or fudging a bracket to make it fit. That's the difference between a proper tailgate lift assist kit and a generic one off the shelf. Fitment is sorted before it lands in your shed, same as our tub sliders, which are built to the same vehicle-specific standard.
The Cobra 4x4 tailgate assist strut kits solve a different problem. A loaded ute tailgate, especially on a full-size dual-cab, can weigh well over 20kg. Drop it and it swings down hard. Do it a hundred times over a few years and the hinges, the latch plate, and your wrist all pay for it. The assist struts act as a damper, slowing the drop to a controlled descent and taking the strain off the latch mechanism over the long term.
These are mechanical gas struts only. No wiring, no remote integration. They bolt into the tailgate hinge area using vehicle-specific brackets and replace the standard unassisted hinges. The Cobra 4x4 design uses a shock-style strut construction rather than a simple spring, which gives a more consistent rate of resistance across the full arc of travel. Lift assist is firm enough to raise the gate with one hand even when the tub is pulling on the structure.
If you want both controlled drop and remote locking, you'd need the full electric lock kit, which includes electric gas struts as part of the package.
Current strut kits in stock cover these platforms:
The Cobra 4x4 Electric Kick Sensor ($119, down from $219 RRP) is a universal add-on that gives you hands-free tailgate or boot opening via a foot sweep sensor. Useful when you're carrying gear in both hands and can't reach a button or remote. It mounts under the vehicle and activates on a deliberate kick motion, not accidental contact. Available in two configurations to suit different install positions.
Worth pairing with the Tub Accessories and Storage range if you're building out a full tub setup.
The honest answer is that they do two different jobs, and plenty of owners run both. The electric lock kit is the priority if tailgate security is your main concern, particularly if you're parking your ute in public areas or worrying about tools and camping gear in the tub. The strut kit is the priority if you're mainly after reducing daily wear and making it easier to operate the tailgate with one hand when you're loaded up.
The Hilux 2021 onwards is worth calling out specifically: the single-handle design on that generation requires a different strut bracket to earlier models. The correct kit is the Hilux 2021+ single handle strut, not the 2015 to 2019 version, even though both fit the N80 platform at a glance. Get the year right.
For the full range of 4x4 upgrades across roller shutters and tub lids, tub racks, and side steps and rock sliders, head back to the main 4x4 accessories range.
Cobra 4x4 builds these to handle Aussie conditions without falling apart in twelve months, which is part of why they've become one of the go-to options for an easy lift tailgate assist setup. If you're comparing options and want the best tailgate assist Australia has on the market right now, this is where to start, and it's the same reason we carry their gear across the wider 4x4 accessories range.
A tailgate assist works well alongside other tub upgrades too. Plenty of owners pair theirs with car rack storage solutions for gear that doesn't fit in the tray, so the whole ute ends up better sorted for work or weekends away.
