Picking a rooftop tent usually means choosing between something cheap that won't last a season, or a premium tent that costs three and a half to four thousand dollars for materials you could get at a fraction of the price elsewhere. Cobra 4x4 sits in the gap most people are actually looking for: proper hardshell construction and genuine canvas quality, without the inflated price tag that premium European brands attach to the same specs. Browse the wider 4x4 accessories range if you're kitting out the whole vehicle rather than just the roof.
Look through our 4x4 accessories range now to find a rooftop tent that matches your 4wd and how you plan to use it. The great outdoors in Australia is waiting, are you prepared?
...
Cobra's roof top tents use 320 GSM ripstop canvas across the range. GSM measures grams per square metre, so a higher number means a denser, heavier weave that resists tearing and holds up to UV exposure better over time. Cheaper tents on the market often sit well below this, which is why they degrade faster in Australian sun and start to sag or fray at the seams within a season or two. At 320 GSM, the canvas is built to handle repeated setup and pack-down across years of trips, not just a handful of weekends. Inside, you also get a 70 millimetre foam mattress with 10 millimetres of condensation matting underneath, which keeps moisture from getting trapped between the mattress and the tent floor on cold nights.
Every tent in the range has built-in channels along the shell, so you can attach an awning or other accessories directly without drilling new holes into the hardshell. This matters because drilling into an aluminium alloy shell after the fact risks compromising the weatherproofing seal, and most warranties won't cover damage caused by aftermarket modifications. If you're planning to add a platform rack setup or want to expand your shelter with an awning down the track, check that your chosen model has these channels before you buy.
The Premium Summit 160 is built for compact dual cab racks or short canopies where you don't want the tent overhanging the vehicle. It opens from the side rather than folding upward, which keeps the footprint tight without sacrificing headroom once it's up. The sturdy mattress and straightforward folding mechanism mean it goes up fast whether you're stopping for one night or settling in for a longer tour.
At only 12 centimetres high when packed down, the Low Profile 130 cuts wind resistance more than the standard models, which matters if you're doing long highway stretches with the tent mounted the whole trip. It suits utes and SUVs running tub racks and keeps a sleeker line on the roof. Inside, the storage layout is built to handle Australian conditions without feeling cramped, and the shell is light enough that lifting it on and off solo isn't a struggle.
The Tourer 130 is a triangle-shaped roof top tent designed around two people rather than a family group. The triangular shape cuts through wind more efficiently while driving than a flat-roofed design, and despite the slim profile the shell is genuinely waterproof rather than just water-resistant. It mounts onto standard flat roof top tent racks, so fitment is straightforward if you're already running a compatible rack system.
Capacity is the first real decision to make across the range. The 2-person triangle-shaped tents, including the Tourer 130 and Summit Low Profile 130, suit couples or solo travellers who want a lighter, more aerodynamic shape. Larger folding tents in the range sleep 3 to 4 and are built to suit bigger tubs as well as single cab setups, trading some aerodynamic efficiency for genuine sleeping space. If you're regularly travelling as a family or with gear-heavy mates, the larger footprint is worth that trade-off. If it's just you or a partner, the smaller triangle tents are lighter to lift onto the roof and easier to manage without help.
Fitment also depends on what's already on your vehicle. Many models are designed to fit compact ute canopies, so you don't lose access to your garage or driveway clearance. All Cobra 4x4 tents are built around an aluminium alloy hardshell, which is what allows the lightweight aerodynamic profile while still giving you a rigid structure that locks down securely for driving.
